The Department of Justice and Attorney General has organised a workshop on the Family Protection Act.
The workshop will provide stakeholders with training on the provisions of the Family Protection Legislation, including the Act and its enabling guidelines.
The stakeholders include Lae’s Police, Justice Department and the Family Support Centre.
This awareness and training workshop is an implementation of the family protection regulation, gazetted in April this year.
The Regulations are guidelines of the Family Protection Act that was passed by Parliament in 2013.
The Department of Justice has rolled out awareness throughout the four regions of PNG, with the support of the Australian government.
Principal Legal Officer and Lawyer, Serena Sasingian, is facilitating the workshop.
The Family Protection Act includes the application for Family Protection Orders and constitutional requirements, and also the penalties for an offence of domestic violence.
The Family Protection Regulation provides protection of family and district and village courts, to make orders for domestic violence, and related matters.
The stakeholders in Lae undergoing the training include the Police Sexual Offense Squad and Family and Sexual Violence Unit, the Justice Department, and Family Support Centre.
Miss Sasingian, who also works with young people through The Voice Inc., and Family PNG, said child abuse cases are increasing in PNG.
