SP Sports Awards Finalists 2018 Announced

The PNG Hunters, PNG Mosquitoes and the PNG Garamuts with the Men’s Under 19 National Cricket Team have been named as finalists in the Team Category of the SP Sports Awards.

The finalists of all the 11 categories were announced today by the Secretary of the PNG Olympic Committee, Auvita Rapilla.

The awards are to recognise the achievements of athletes in 2017, and will be presented to the winners on May 26th at the Crown Plaza Hotel.

Among the 11 categories are:

  • Sports media award
  • sports photo of the year
  • community sports initiative
  • national performance of the year
  • team of the year and
  • female and male athletes of the year

The Hunters, the Mosquitoes and the Garamuts made the finalists for the team category while weightlifter, Morea Baru, who won gold at the Mini Pacific Games in Vanuatu is up against Ase Boas for Rugby League and Mahuru Dai in cricket for the male athlete of the year.

Female athletes go between Rachael Sapery James, Abigaile Tere Apisah and Dika Toua.

People’s Choice Award will be done by the general public through an SMS voting.

To vote your selected nominee, simply dial 1 star (*), first name of the person, hash (#), and send to 1600.

Voting starts today and ends on the 18th of May.

Special guest on the awards night will be Jacqui Cooper from Australia who represented her country in the sport of Aerial Skiing.

Her records include five world titles holding 39 world cup medals, 24 world cup wins and 3 major world championship medals.
