Madang Governor, Jim Kas, has proposed for the education department to introduce legislation that will ban students from taking mobile phones to school, and to stop school fights.
Governor Kas said in parliament this week, that he will be visiting schools in Madang to inform them of his proposal, and needs the education department to quickly address these issues.
His comments follow the recent fight in Ramu and Bogia Secondary Schools in Madang.
The recent fights and burning down of buildings in the two Madang schools prompted Governor Kas to question the education minister on the appropriate alternatives his department will take to minimise school fights.
Kas said, the idea of students taking mobile phones to schools must also be discouraged, as some students have misused the devices.
However, Education Minister, Nick Kuman, responded saying school fights are a result of bad attitudes and is the responsibility of the school management and parents, to fix.
Kuman said there will not be a legislation created to ban students from taking their mobile phones to school, but adjustments can be made to manage the use of phones during classes.
