Health Pro’s opting for private practice tabled in parliament

Parliament was told that many health professionals are moving to private practice.

This was highlighted by Health Minister Michael Malabag when responding to series of questions fromthe Member for Samarai – Murua Gordon Wesley.

Mr Wesley enquired if more health workers could be employed at a sub Health Centre in his electorate.

It’sthe same problem experienced by many District Health Centres throughoutthe country; shortage of medical supplies and health professionals to administer medicine and life – saving operations.

Health Minister Michael Malabag who wasthe former Trade Union Congress President saidthe issue is simple, it relates to poor remuneration packages for health workers in public hospitals. This result inthe increased number of health professionals opting for private practice, butthe situation can be reversed.

The Minister responsible said foreign medical professionals will also be utilised on need be basis but on a small – scale.
