The newly built Police accommodation at Tasion Barracks in Port Moresby is near completion.
It will house residents living near sections of Tasion Barracks road, who have complained of their health risks.
The progress of work at Tasion Barracks looks positive, with 21 duplex accomodation nearing completion. They will house 42 families.
EMTV News visited the site today, and saw workers doing final touches on buildings by plastering walls, painting, plumbing, electrical connections and roofing.
This million kina housing project was initiated in June following health concerns raised by Tasion Barracks residents, regarding a road construction from Gerehu to Nine Mile.
In 2014, 46 police officers and their families submitted a petition to Chinese Habour Engineering for the relocation of their homes prior to the road construction.
One of their demands is pertaining to their health and safety, prompting them to ask for relocation away from the barracks.
In June, frustrated residents prevented road work at sections of the road simultaneously calling on the developer to settle their grievances.
In response to that, 20 shipment containers of building material, housing kits, arrived from China, for construction of their homes.
Contractors Orinepo started the project two months ago, but left NCDC as a caretaker of the project and then handed over to Phoenix construction yesterday.
Many workers are local youth. They say these structures have been physically erected, without much use of sophisticated machines.
The scope of work is expected to be completed by the end of December, 2016.
