Four UPNG Students Arrested for Unlawful Use of Vehicle Appear in Court

Four students from the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG), who were arrested on June 24 and were charged for unlawful use of a motor vehicle, appeared for mention at the Waigani Committal Court today.

They four students are; Brendon Kisa, Frank Luai and Elijah Nere all from Wabag in Enga province, and Divinal Marus from Maprik in East Sepik province.

On June 24, they were seen driving a Toyota Camry sedan, belonging to Minihi Motors. It is alleged that they did not receive the owner’s consent prior to using the vehicle.

Senior Magistrate Cosmas Bidar told the four that the car was reported stolen a month prior to them being arrested.

However, Laken Agilo, the lawyer representing the four denied the allegations, and said they were unlawfully charged and detained by police.

Agilo clarified publicly that their arrest was not related to the burning of vehicles and buildings at UPNG’s main campus.
