Delay Automatic Payroll Suspension PNGTA

ThPNG TeachersAssociation has called for a delay inthe automatic payroll suspension for teachers.

Earlier last week, acting secretary for Education, Luke Taita andthe acting chairman ofthe Teaching Service Commission, Beran Sori warned that teachers who failed to submittheir Duty Resumption forms by would be taken offthe payroll.

HoweverPNGTA said that teachers’ should not be taken offthe payroll untilthe end ofthe first term.

National General Secretary forPNG A Ugwalubu Mowana appealed tothe Department of Education and Teaching Services Commission not to engagethe automatic suspension of payroll for teachers, until after term one.

Althoughthe Association acknowledgesthe importance of teachers Duty resumption forms, Mr. Mowana insiststhere are factors that contribute tothe late submission ofthe forms.

Two weeks ago, a record 43,000 teachers were identiflied to be put offthe payroll; however, this number has decreased significantly as a result of actions taken bythe Department.

The automatic payroll suspension is part ofthe payroll cleansing system buPNGTA does not believe it is right because many authorities are still doing appointments.

A teachers’ congress will be held in Port Moresby in July, where teaching professionals will address government policies relating tothem.
