Oro Needs Disaster Funds

By Vasinatta Yama – EM TV, Port Moresby

Oro Governor, Garry Juffa has called on the government to release their disaster funds, to maintain their 24 hours alertness and ability, to respond to national disasters.

At this time of the year, Oro is facing strong winds, heavy rains, floods and droughts in some parts of the province.

Governor Juffa said while waiting for their funds to be released, he has allocated one million Kina from the Provincial Services Improvement Fund (PSIP) to prepare them for any disaster that may occur.

He was frustrated at the government’s delay in releasing the funds.

The disaster funds come under the Special Support Infrastructure Grant that is budgeted annually and given only to low performing economic provinces like Oro, Gulf and Manus.

However, he said they did not receive the funding this year because it was dimmed as “non-essential” funding.

Juffa expressed his frustration over the funds and said for the government to refrain from making empty promises.
