The 2016 PNG Women’s Forum began yesterday, with the theme for this year’s event being ‘Women Empowering Women: Her Success is Your Success.
The forum began today at Crowne Plaza in Port Moresby, with wife of the current Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, Madam Lynda Babao-O’Neill amongst those who made remarks during the opening session of the forum.
Babao-O’Neill told participants that with the theme looking primarily at empowering each other, it was important to recognise that through women failing to effectively work together they are essentially there own worst enemy.
She reassured guests that there were many women in PNG who handle higher positions in many male dominated fields.
The United States Embassy to PNG is acting as a co-host of the forum, and newly appointed US Ambassador to PNG, Catherine Ebert-Gray said that she hoped that women in attendance walk away from the forum inspired, and begin to strive towards addressing issues of gender based violence and empowering women in politics.
