Women in Sports Lack Sponsorship

With the PNG U20 Women’s Soccer Team down in New Zealand for the Oceania Football Confederation Qualifiers, prominent figures have raised concerns about the amount of sponsorship that women receive in sport.

Oro Governor Garry Juffa has been one of those calling for more support of women, including PNG Football Association Senior Vice President, Linda Wonuhali.

While the SP Hunters and the National Soccer League competition have been big winners on the financial front, so far in the New Year, support and sponsorship of Women Support and individual athletes has gone begging.

Linda Wohunali is a former PNG soccer player, and is now the Senior Vice president of the PNG Football Association.

Recently at the opening of the NSL competition in Port Moresby, Linda raised her own concerns about the inequalities in support for women girls.

She is concerned about the level of sponsorship that women receive, considering the huge amount that the men receive in comparison.

Other high profile people in the country have also raised concerns about the lack of support for women in sport, most recently, Northern Governor, Garry Juffa.

While the hype and fanfare that men in sport bring to the country has been overwhelming, PNG women have been doing the nation proud.

And with the upcoming Pacific Games to be hosted here on home soil, perhaps it’s time for relevant authorities to start looking in a different direction.
