West Papua Citizenship in Papua New Guinea is an issue regarded as long overdue.
An estimated 40,000 to 50,000 West Papuans live in refugee camps in Papua New Guinea.
Their efforts to receive citizenship status are undermined by the high fees charged for Papua New Guinean citizenship; they will have to pay K10,000 to be granted citizenship.
Today, Oro Governor Gary Juffa expressed his disappointment over this oppressive treatment of West Papuans by the Papua New Guinea Government.
He said West Papuans living in Papua New Guinea should be given citizenship at no cost.
“They are Melanesians; Pacific Islanders rightfully deserve citizenship over asylum seekers brought into the country,” he said.
Many of the West Papuans have no access to basic services such as health and education.
“It’s like they are living in a prison camp in PNG,” Juffa says.
He has taken up the fight of the West Papuans to bring global attention to their cause.
