Having achieved a haul of medals during the recent Pacific Games, and with junior weightlifter Fred Oala receiving a silver at the Commonwealth Youth Games, the PNG Weightlifting Federation (PNGWF) is now looking at further developing its lifters with a host of international tournaments on the cards.
At a press conference with major sponsors Trukai, PNGWF President, Sir John Dawanincura, said plans are in place for more young lifters to be given exposure.
Currently, the federation is placing a large emphasis on sending athletes overseas, however a big part of their plans for the future look at supporting lifters at both club and national level.
Sir John is also hoping that clubs throughout the country can meet the criteria that the federation has set, so that further support can be given.
Trukai Sales and Marketing General Manager, Andrew Daubney, further reiterated the support that his organisation can provide, whilst also pushing for development of all sports in the country.
Currently, focus is on the Oceania Championships and also the Olympics in Rio in 2016, but the target remains the Commonwealth Games in 2018.
Trukai has also assisted the PNG Weightlifting Federation with a further K50,000 which will be used by the lifters.
