The Taiwan Technical Mission which has been rice seed producer in Papua New Guineasince 1990 will come to end.
Its work will be handed over tothe Department of Agriculture and Livestock as of next year.
The first step is to transfer funds currently managed by Taiwan Technical Mission to DAL management.
This was supported with a cheque presentation of K21, 000.00 tothe Department.
The framework of rice seed production program will run in Madang, Eastern Highlands, Central Province and Bougainville.
Taiwan Trade Mission representative Daniel Hu said this agreement symbolizesthe transformation of rice industry in PNG
Mr Hu added that Taiwan has realisedthe expansion of rice production and wants to meet that demand.
Acting Secretary for DAL Dr Vele Pat Ila’ava said Taiwan’s expertise in rice production has been very helpful.
Two varieties of rice seed will be distributed for highlands and lowland vegetation.
Farmers throughouPNG will attend constant training for the technology of rice farming by DAL officers.
