Prisons to receive K4.8 Million Annually

Prison Commanders now havethe power to authorize expenditure for their prisons.

Under this new arrangementthe Correctional Service Commissioner will no longer be in charge of authorizing payments to prisons.

Correctional Services Commissioner Martin Belthasar and his senior management madethe decision to decentralisethe financial powers two years ago.

Todaythe department launchedthe CS Finance Program.

All twenty prisons nationwide will receive an annual funding of four point eight million kina.

All prison and jail commanders now have Twenty Thousand kina each month for operational costofuel and maintenance and ther expenditure.

This is to will give commanders more flexibility to operate on day to day basis.

Commissioner Belthasar challenged all commanders to be transparent intheir spending and be more innovate to achieve maximum results for their prisons.

Representtting prison commanders, superintendent Kiddy Keko thanked CS management for taking this bold step to transfer financial powers.

Withthe successful implementation of financial powers, provincial jails will make financial decisions independently.

The roll out ofthe program was funded bythe Australian Governmentothrough AusAID.
