Poultries Built to Sustain Tapini Women

By Theckla Gunga – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Three poultry projects were built and given to women from the three landowner clans of Tapini Local level Government in the Goilala District in Central Province, where the Tolokuma Mine is located.

This is part of the Women in Mining program initiated by the National Government to create income avenues for women living in the mining areas.

The poultry projects costed over K80, 000 and were funded by the National Government under the Public Investment Program (PIP) for Tolukuma Mine.

Part of that money was used to build sheds to house 15 piglets and bring in six boxes of chicks to start the projects.

The WIM initiative commenced in 2012 and later gave birth to several other projects.

The Tapini women are mainly subsistence farmers and sell their produce to earn money.

But the establishment of these poultries is expected to open up other business opportunities.

Meanwhile, the operation at the Tolukuma Mine remains temporarily closed following a K100 million loss the company made early this year.

EM TV News understands the mine developer, Petromin, will soon be concluding discussions with a new mine developer.
