The visit by the Indonesian Foreign Minister, Retno Marsudi has re-enforced calls by the former Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister to implement the commitments signed by Indonesia and Papua New Guinea in a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) in 2013.
During her visit she emphasised on increasing PNG-Indonesian bilateral trade and opportunities to support local businesses.
Mrs Marsupi said both countries are yet to achieve their potential.
As of January 2015, PNG-Indonesia’s Balance of Trade stands at $US709 million. Indonesia’s Foreign Minister believes there is enough room to improve bilateral trade.
The Indonesian government also wants to increase business opportunities for local businesses. During her brief stay in the country, she presented a shell-making grinder to PNG Women in Business President, Janet Sape. Mrs Sape, who was accompanied by another local business entrepreneur, Janet Sios, says as local business women, they see huge potential in the Indonesian market.
The Indonesian Foreign Minister says Indonesia stands ready to do business with local enterprenuers. She further called on both countries’ Chamber of Commerce to immediately start implementing business avenues, as agreed in the 2013 MoA.
