A new brand of street lights, that is effective, slimmer and consumes less electricity, is being installed at various streets in Boroko, in the nation’s capital.
These street lights produce more lighting with limited consumption of electricity, as compared to the previous lights used.
The LG LED, Korea-made street lights were chosen over other brands because of their quality, the amount of light they produce and the longer manufacturer’s warranty of 5 years. They can last for up to 15 years.
This is an initiative of local MP for Moresby North East, Labi Amaiu, who aims to reduce crime and ensure people walking around at night are safe.
Mr Amaiu says petty crimes, rape and murder cases are increasing and to ensure public safety is guaranteed, street lights must be installed along all roadside areas.
Studies carried out in other countries show that increasing the number of street lights in urban and sub-urban areas can help to reduce crime; and have positive effects on the economy, and pedestrians movement at night.
