A new hydro power plant will be built in Mendi, Southern Highlands Province to meetthe increasing user demand.
State Enterprise Minister Ben Micah announced this during his visit to Mendi overthe weekend.
A visit was made tothe proposed site ofthe new hydro station.
The hydro plant will be built under a public private partnership arrangement betweePNG Power and Niugini Asset Management Limited.
Paul Harris from Niugini Asset Management limited saidthey hadthe capacity and were happy to partner withPNG Power to build this hydro.
“The reality is thatowe just want to take water out ofthe river, utilisethe water and put back intothe river. We don’t want to damagethe environment andthe ecological beatuty of Mendi,” said Paul Harris.
PNG Power CEO John Tangit’saidthe construction of this hydro would greatly supplement Ramu and Paunda Hydros as Hela and Western highlands Provinces are also connected tothe Ramu Grid.
“We want to make sure we have enough generation capacity around here because given that Hela being connected tothe grid, there’s going to be more load coming in. This plant will be central and it can be able to stabilise power requirements in this area,” said Tangit.
It would take between 12 to 18 months to build and Mr Tangit’sayPNG Power will also upgradetheir transmission network.
Yonki Hydro generates 60 megawatts, Paunda generates 10 megawatts and this new Hydro will generate 20 megawatts.
