Setting an exemplary pace in the mining industry with their Melanesian approach to social mapping and landowner identification, Indochine Mining has concluded the last part of their Landowner investigation study at the Mt. Kare Gold Project Site.
Approved by government officials, these landowner groups have been identified through kinship and blood ties. The purpose of this approach was to secure legal rightful entitlements for genuine landowners.
The Melanesian approach is a result of successful partnerships between skilled sociologists and key government officials. This implements a customary system developed by a clan’s oral history, the ‘Malu’, which spans over 15 generations. This identifies the genealogy, kinship, bloodlines, land use and customary criteria.
After 2 years of extensive work and involving over 400 participants, the community affairs team has since identifying legitimate landowners finalized surveillance of claimed boundaries, resolving a dispute that arose in the process.
