Health Department stages World NO Tobacco Day Walk

TheWorld No Tobacco Dayfalls onthe 31st of May every year as a reminder that Tobacco Use is unhealthy and is responsible for millions of lives inthe world.

Thetheme for this year is “Ben advertising, promotion and sponsorship of Tobacco.

Non- Communicable Diseases Program Manageress, Vicky Wari says research have proverd that about six million people inthe world includin PNG die each year from  tobacco related diseases and that it is a worldwide epidemic.

The Global Youth Tobacco survey in 2007shows that children’start smoking atthe age of 8. Wari says children are likely to face one or more tobacco related health problems inthe next ten to fifteen years.

Ms Wari saysPNG hasthe highest tobacco consumption rate inthe Pacific andtherefore discourage people to smoke.

PNG Sport Foundation has backedthe Health Department in organizingthe Walk:his Sunday to commemoratetheWorld NO Tobacco Day

PNG Sport Foundation Special Events Coordinator Thomas Kahai said, everyone must take this seriously. Fromthe Sport perspective, Kahai said, Smoking is not encouraged in Sport.

The Program started today and continues tomorrow and will end on Sunday withthe walk.
