Garden Hills Market Destroyed

By Staycey Yalo – EMTV News, Port Moresby

This morning, policemen loaded in several police vehicles, got off at the Garden Hills Market and destroyed the informal market, burning all the tables and throwing food items to bystanders.

According to two community leaders, the policemen who went to Garden Hills were demanding K3,000 compensation regarding an incident involving two policemen last week Saturday.

“Last week Saturday, two policemen attached with NCD police unit, who rent at Garden Hills, had a drunken brawl with each other at the market. This morning, they came in truckloads demanding to compensate them for the shame they caused themselves,” said Joe May.

Although the market has been criticised by many residents who live around the area for the traffic issues caused by vehicles and security issues for those that walk back and forth to the bus stop, NCD Governor Parkop, said he has directed the City Manager to regulate the Garden Hills Market.

Governor Parkop said he is not sure who authorised the police to destroy the market but NCDC has not made any decision yet to shut down the market.

Mr. May and Mr. Matthew Hane, community leaders at Garden Hills, including some vendors from Garden Hills Market have filed a formal complaint at the Boroko Police Station this afternoon.

Meanwhile, Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’Dranou, is yet to respond to the matter enquired by EMTV News.
