Fiji’s Kable Wires in for Single Rise Shooting Gold

PORT MORESBY, July 10 – Pacific Games history was made in shooting on Thursday as three people pulled the trigger on perfect scores in the single rise event at June Valley Shooting Range.

Glen Kable (FIJ), Christian Stephen (FIJ) and Moeava Bambridge (TAH) all scored perfect 100s in the clay target competition – also known as double barrel shotgun – where a target is launched into the air 45m away and a shooter is allowed both shots to make the hit.

With all three shooters tied, Kable kept his nerve in the ensuing shoot-off to grab yet another Pacific Games gold medal.

“All the competitors shot at one hundred targets and three of us all shot 100 targets,” Kable said.

“The three shooters, myself and the other two, went out and starting shooting again until somebody missed. It’s last man standing.”

And if Kable was pleased with his effort, he was even happier that young teammate and protege, Stephen, won silver.

“I started coaching Christian as an absolute beginner probably about four or five years ago,” Kable said.

“He’s progressed a long way in that time and he’s shooting exceptionally well.”

“It was very rewarding for both my own performance, and Christian’s today.”

Kable, an Olympic and international shooter for many years who has won multiple Pacific Games gold medals, said the standard of the 2015 Pacific Games surprised him.

“It [the standard] was higher than I expected. I honestly didn’t think that it would be more than one person shooting a hundred out of a hundred today.”

“To have three [shoot perfectly] in a field of twenty eight was exceptionally high. It was very good shooting today.”

“And I think there was one or two 99s and a couple of 98s. The scores were very high today.”

In the single rise team event, Kable, Stephen and teammate Adarsh Datt took out gold for Fiji ahead of New Caledonia and Tahiti.
