If recent tournaments are anything to go by, there has been a definite surge of interest in the shorter format of rugby league here, in Papua New Guinea.
The recent Fairfax, Gaire 9s and the Gold Medal performance of the National 9s team in this years’ Pacific Games have not only lifted the profile of the 9s format and the SP Hunters support and the codes development, but also the game in general.
Starting this weekend with the Lakwaharu 9s tournament, already attracting more than 40 teams, the annual Keleone 9s Puka Temu Cup, and with 30 teams confirmed so far; the Kila Haoda Southern 9s tournament to be staged here in Port Moresby.
The organising of such events not only attracts the interest of the general public, but also creates a competitive environment for the code to be promoted.
