The East New Britain Chamber of Commence has lashed out against the East New Britain provincial government for allowing the construction of a multi-million kina sewer treatment pond at Ulaveo between Tokua Airport and Kokopo town.
East New Britain chamber of commerce President, David Stein said the course of the project has been poorly done with no public consultation and high environmental impacts.
Mr. Stein said the project is constructed at the gateway into Kokopo and gives a bad impression to the large number of tourists that the province has attracted so far.
The Chamber of Commerce President said the outfall of wastes into the Blanche Bay was simply unacceptable as it poses a serious risk to marine wildlife and to the general public using these waters.
Stein said the concerns have been brought to the attention of the Department of Environmental and Conservation.
The Environmental department is expected to issue a stop work notice on the project until a full design and environmental impact assessment is carried out.
