The Morata sewerage plant was officially commissioned after rehabilitation of it by Eda Ranu that cost up to K300,000.
Eda Ranu not only deals with clean water but also waste water, Eda Ranu General Manager Hennery Mokono said it is a dirty job and someone has to do it.
Mokono said Waigani sewerage also needs to be rehabilitated as it will not be able to cater. Mokono said there is proposal before NEC for its rehabilitation.
Meanwhile, the Morata Sewerage Plant has settlers living around it and fishing in the sewerage pond, as fish is abundant. But the Eda Ranu General Manager warned that the fish is not consumable and a health hazard.
The Morata sewerage plant was built in the 1940’s around the same time the University of Papua New Guinea was built, and was meant to only cater for the university.
Today Sewerage from UPNG, NCC Valley, Gerehue stage 1 and Rainbow ends there.
