CBC: Violence not the Answer

By Jack Lapauve Jr – EMTV News, Port Moresby

The Catholic Bishop Conference of PNG and Solomon Islands has condemned the violence by UPNG students yesterday.

Head of CBC, Fr Victor Roche, says violence should not be used as leverage to solve the current unrest between students and the UPNG Administration.

“We do not want to see students using violence to solve the problem”, said Fr Roche.

“Violence is not the way forward for students,” said Fr Roche.

“The plan reconciliation program was intended to be carried out yesterday but was cancelled,” he added.

Fr Victor was backed by UPNG Catholic Chaplin, Fr Josep Wojen, who has been instrumental in preparing students for a reconciliation program.

UPNG Catholic Chaplin, Fr Wojen, said the looting and burning of properties has affected the planned peace process.

“We have been working closely with the students and staff to solve this matter, however yesterday’s sudden attack has disrupted out intended program,” said Fr Wojen.

Meanwhile, CBC Head Fr Roche called on students not to take any further actions but allow the reconciliation process to take place.

Adding on Fr Roche called on national leaders to recall parliament and solve the matter on the floor of parliament.
