Australian Government will pay for the Lae Angau Hospital reconstruction worth over 600 million kina as part ofthe Asylum Centre Agreement.
The funding is separate fromthe aid Australia currently provides for Papua New Guinea
This comes after years of lobbying forthPNG Government to approver a 64 million kina designed proposal of a modern hospital.
Nablu told critics that K15 million held in a special project account would only be used for the redevelopment ofthe Angau Hospital.
The redevelopment however hit a snag several months beforethe conference. The National Executive Council would not approver a K64 million designed proposal for a hospital that would cost over half a billion kina.
Whilethe management continued to push for approval ofthe design, political development inthe region have fast trackthe funding for the reconstruction. It’s somethingthe hospitals’ management and board weren’t expecting.
Lae’s Angau Hospital Management welcomedthe announcement; however, some staff and members ofthe public saythe hospital project is tainted bythe Asylum Centre Deall.
