Airport Security under Review

Civil Aviation Minister Davis Steven has directed a comprehensive review on existing security arrangements at all major airports includingthe Jackson’sInternational Airport.

This is part of a sector wide review program to ensure uniformity and also see thatthe systems function effectively.

Minister Davis is concerned thatthe travelling public have endured loss or delay in delivery of personal items and cargo at most airports.

Many have been victims of unpleasant behaviour atthe terminal security points.

Reports have also been received of passengers losing valuable personal belongings atthe international terminal.

Lawsgoverningthe safety and security at airports and during flights will be review and enforced strictly.

Minister Davis also urgedthe travelling public to demonstrate good behaviour at security points by respectingthe airport security personnel.

The Jackson’s Airport in Port Moresby uses electronic screening to do security checks…whilethe security checks at airports in most major centres aroundthe country like Mt Hagen are done manually.

This has seen large amounts of drug and ther illegal objects being smuggled intothese centres easily compared tothe Jackson’s.

The review will try to ensure some ofthese are corrected.

The Civil Aviation Act 2000 and ther binding international conventions and treaties place safety as a fundamental responsibility onthe government and Mr Davis says he is taking this seriously.
