Air Niugini Exercise Caution For Cyclone Ita

Air Niugini’s flight PX 954 to Gurney airport, Milne Bay this morning was cancelled due to heavy rains and rising flood levels that cut off access to and from the airport after cyclone Ita swept through the Province yesterday.

The airline is closely monitoring the situation for tomorrow’s operation.

All Q400 operations to and from Cairns, Australia have also been temporarily suspended due to a cyclone warning in the area.

Passengers on Air Niugini charter flight, PX 042 from Lihir to Cairns today were flown to Port Moresby where they were transferred onto a Fokker 100 aircraft to continue their travel to Cairns.

A similar arrangement is being planned for all Q400 flights to Cairns tomorrow morning including the direct Rabaul/Cairns service; its passengers will come via Port Moresby to be transferred onto a jet aircraft. The afternoon flight PX098 to Cairns will, however, be cancelled due to strong winds forecasted to hit Cairns airport.

The situation is beyond the airline’s control. Safety is always of paramount importance in Air Niugini’s operations.
