Sea Piracy Concern Raised in Parliament

Following the brutal murder of a fisherman outside the Paga Hill Point last Monday, the issue of sea piracy and the effectiveness of sea piracy was raised in Parliament today.

Kairuku-Hiri MP, Peter Isoaimo, questioned the Police Minister if the Sea Policing and Patrols are still in existence along the Motuan coastline.

“I want to know if the water rats or water police still exist to patrol the coastline of Central Province and Port Moresby,” Isoaimo said.

Police Minister, Robert Atiyafa, in response said funding constraints remains the challenge of boosting sea policing around the country.

“For the last ten years, past ministers have put in plans to develop sea policing but to date there are no boats out at sea,” Atiyafa said.

The Minister said the police force needs at least over K1 billion to rehabilitate and develop the police force.
