Higher Education Minister Guarantees Safety of University Students

A question was directed at Higher Education Minister, Francis Marus, concerning the safety of university students returning to class in September.

The minister gave his assurance that student safety was of paramount importance to the department and that it was working towards maintaining a peaceful resumption.

Milne Bay Governor, Titus Philemon, raised this concern during the Questions Without Notice session in parliament.

Marus said that his ministry already had necessary security measures in place to guarantee students could return to class without disruption.

Police, he said, were currently manning the campuses to avoid outside influences igniting tension.

He called specifically on the Engan and Southern Highlands Governors to resolve issues that sparked unrest, before the students returned to the campus to formalise this through a ceremony which will be conducted by the Morobe Provincial Government.

The minister however was pleased that students were willing to resume classes.

He said special arrangements have been made with provincial governors to assist self-sponsored students to travel back to Port Moresby and Lae following what he described as “unplanned circumstances”.
