Cheshire Disability Services PNG has been providing care services for people born with, and those who have disabilities caused through accidents.
The organisation has recently been running a program called Community Based Rehabilitation.
The program brings awareness, health promotion, medical care, rehabilitation and assistive devices to people with special needs living in their communities.
Tore is 2-years-old from Kerema, residing at Vabukori in Taekone Village Port Moresby. From a distance he looks like a normal 2-year-old, but tragically had an accident that has caused his left limbs to be affected.
Tore is a part of the Community Based Rehabilitation that Cheshire provides and receives basic physiotherapy from Tom, a field worker. Tom has five clients he visits on Tuesday, another client being 45-year-old Sam Charlie from Kerema who was in a car accident three years ago. For two years he was unable to use both hands and legs, but after Cheshire identified him his story has become a success story for the program.
The story of Tore and Sam are amongst the many that Cheshire helps each week. Joyce Koupere, Cheshire’s Program Officer, says there is a need for funding for this program if it is to continue.
Other programs and services they provide are inclusive education and early childhood care, respite care, protection and home reintegration and physiotherapy services.
