Working Committee Established to Resolve Koiari Landowner Issues

A working committee has been established to resolve matters concerning landowners in the Koiari catchment where the Sirinumu Dam and Rouna Power supply is located.

Addressing the landowners today, Trade, Commerce and Industry Minister, Richard Maru, says millions have been paid by the government, however no tangible development is evident.

Landowners were concerned about K20 million in payments, which were paid to Koiari landowners for outstanding benefits for water and electricity usage in the city.

Minister Maru announced that a new development package will be formulated for Koiari people to benefit from.

Among the steps taken to address concerns of Koiari landowners, the 2001 MOU will be reviewed to serve people in areas of education, health and road infrastructure.

It is understood out of the K20 million funded earlier this year, no proper development plan was followed.

MP Peter Isoaimo called on leaders to be critical as proper dialogue is now being established with the working team headed by Minister Maru.

The working committee involves officers from Treasury, National Planning, Minister Maru and MP Isoaimo, and leaders from Rouna, Sirinumu, Lower and Upper Koiari.

A consultation process will begin next week, with the basic outcome of formulating a new sustainable development plan for the Koiari resource owners.
