Plans to develop Boxing in PNG

By Elijah Lavett – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

With the Boxing National Championships set to be held in November, plans have been put in place for the development of the sport in the country.

This announcement was made yesterday by President for PNG Boxing, John Avira, who said the venue for the National Championships are yet to be confirmed.

After the successful Pacific Games, Avira said “We would like to reach out to the districts for the National Championships because we believe that our bulk of players come from that area and so we can identify them and turn them into Elite boxers.”

The boxing association has plans in place for programs to kick start, but the programs will be carried out after the National Championships.

“The Annual General Meeting will be there at the Championships and this will than lead to new executives being brought on board in order to roll out the programs,” said MR Avira.

Boxing coordinator Dick Larry urged the different associations to pay their affiliation fees, because after the National Championships, coaching clinics and other programs will be rolled out in the different associations around the province.
