Madang Governor Supports PMIZ Project

by Quinton Alomp – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Madang Governor Jim Kas has thrown his support behind the controversial Pacific Marine Industrial Zone (PMIZ).

Kas said the project will provide benefits to the province, and his administration is supporting the national government’s intention to develop the project.

“As Governor and leader of the Madang provincial assembly, I am for the PMIZ project.

“PMIZ is going to radiate other chain effects in Madang. And instead of members of Parliament raising opposing opinions, we have to sit down and solve it instead of going to the media,” Governor Kas said.

The controversial project has gained popularity in the media recently. Sumkar MP Ken Fairweather, several non-government organisations and local people are all opposing the project based on the grounds that the project would pollute the marine ecosystem and create social problems.

The Sumkar MP wants the project moved to Dylup plantation on the north coast of Madang.

Kas has been silent on the issue until today when he expressed his position.

The construction of the world class tuna factories for PMIZ has slowed, with the government to push hard for completion prior to project loans expiring.
