Empty promises: Lwanga Builds own Classroom

After empty promises of financial assistance, St.Charles Lwanga High School inthe Nation’s Capital has used its limited resources to build its own infrastructure.

Little is known aboutthe High School, hidden away inthe residential areas of Gerehu.

The school is just six years old, butthe last 3 years have seenthe school reach outstanding academic results.

St. Charles Lwanga High School was opened in 2007. A year later, Education Department promisedthe school that its entire infrastructure needs would be met underthe funds for Rehabilitation of Education SectorInfrastructure, commonly known as RESI funds.

That has not happened andthe School has not received any assistance fromthe Education Department since. The school premise’s was once a Vocational Youth Centre, andthe old workshop sheds were converted into temporary classrooms.

Today, a new block consisting six classrooms and an office, was opened thanks tothe school’s savings and project fees paid by parents totaling half a million kina.

Additional assistance also came fromthPNG Sustainable Development Program. Local Member and Minister for Health Michael Malabag was impressed bythe commitment ofthe school and its parents.

The new block means students’and teachers can mover out ofthe old sheds. As a Catholic Church Agency School, Archbishop Rt. Reverand John Ribat blessedthe building.

Overwhelmed bythe school’s self-reliance, Minister Malabag committed K200, 000 to assist withthe schools plan to build more classrooms to cater for a growing number of enrollments.
