Participants Taken Through the StaRS Policy

Environmental Science & Geography division of the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) has been leading a Southern Region Workshop in Alotau, Milne Bay Province on the National Strategy for Responsible Sustainable Development (StaRS) in PNG.

The aim of the workshop is to gather provincial authorities in both the private and public sectors, including the churches to get them to understand the StaRS Policy in order for them to localise and align the policy in their provincial plans.

Provincial Disaster & Emergency Coordinator, Steve Tobessa, says to implement these policies, will differ depending on the environment.

Mr Tobessa mentioned that many small islands around Milne Bay Province differ from Alotau itself and that an awareness at the provincial and district level is vital for people.

Tobessa’s comments come after atolls around Milne Bay have been facing freshwater issues for many years.
