A redevelopment plan for Mendi Hospital is underway to increase inpatient capacity.

The plan has been approverd bythe Central Supplies and Tenders Beard.

Established in 1974, Mendi hospital isthe only referral hospital for the Southern Highlands Province. The hospital is stretched tothe limit trying to cater for the increase in patients.

It has being giventhe same budget of K10.8m for the last five years. Bet it needs K15m yearly to operate.

This budget constraint has resulted inthe hospital facing acute shortage of medical equipment’s.

Chief Executive Officer Joseph Turian saidthe hospital is operating using old equipment’s. Underthe Public Health Actthe hospital has to deliver health services tothe rural areas but this is impossible due to lack of vehicle.

Withthe redevelopment plan ofthe hospital it is hoped assistance will come from authorities concerned.

Earlier this yearthe Prime Minister has made a funding commitment tothe hospital but Mr. Turian said this is still pending.
