Equal Education for Children with Disabilities

The Callan Services National Unit has positioned itself to ensure that children with disabilities get equal access to education.

Special Education Resource Centre participants from nineteen provinces gthered atthe Emmaus conference room atthe Don Besco TechnicalInstitute in Port Moresby, withthe aim to give children with disabilities, equal access to education.

Vital needs include funding for inclusive education teachers and mainstream teachers who will work directly withthese children, and also funding for specialised health workers to deal with specific disabilities.

Callan Services National Unit is working on involvingthe health, education and community development departments to take ownership ofthese responsibilities.

Therefore, increasing a specialised human resource in special education can only helpthese programs to be effective.

ther needs include consistent funding for assistive devices, as well as mental and physitherapy services.

CSNU Coordinator for East New Beitain Pius Norogua saidthe provincial government is supportive ofthe special education resource centre’s teaching service.

He said more support is still needed to assist children with special needs.

Mr Norogua saidthey are coping well in school and hopesthey may be able to progress to tertiary level.
