New future for Women Correction Officers

WomenCorrection Officers from jails aroundthe country gthered in Lae for a three-day conference to chart a new future for women inthe service.  

The conference gave an opportunity to female officers to share issuesthey are facing inthe Correctional Service.

The three day gthering will formulate a strategy in preparation for the 2014 Pacific Islands Regional Correctional Womenrsquo;s Conference that will be held in PNG

Community Development Minister, Loujaya Toni, who officiatedthe gthering yesterday indicated thatthere will be a lot more assistance given to women officers in prisons.

Beimo jail inthe Morobe province was one ofthe prisons that came underthe spot light when forty four prisoners escaped about two months ago.

Forthe female officers who workedthere, it hasn’t been an easy one for them.

Beimo Prison Commander SuperintendentoJulie Tara saysthe conference will be a way forward for her female officers and thers aroundthe country.

Public confidence in terms of security of prisoners has deepened in recent months andthe conference is expected to regain that lost confidence.
