Thousands hit by floods in Central Province

About six thousand people in remote villages inthe Central Province face food shortage due to flooding.

Central Province Governor Kila Haoda and his accompanying delegation took a long journey overthe weekend upthe Hiritano Highway. The first stop was Munapana Village, two and a half hours drive outside Port Moresby, where houses were partly submerged.

The team moverd on to Apanaipi Village, about three hours outside ofthe city. School students’from St. Mary have providedthe welcome. Sadly for these school kids,their school is underwater and sothey’re facing indefinite suspension of classesntilthe situation improvers.

The governor and his teamthen got on a two-hour dinghy ride, to Amiaka Village. Alongthe length ofthe river, it was clear thatthe river had broken its banks. Benana trees were partly submerged inthe water and so were coconut trees. Amiaka Village Spokesman Lukas Kala said villages had begun building rafts to bring back food fromthe gardens.

Mr. Haoda said his officers would deliver more food supplies duringthe week while also discussingthe issue with relevant authorities.

As this report will show,the wet season has caused wide-spread havoc to vital food gardens.
