Kerema isthe capital ofthe Gulf Province. It is alsothe host ofthe second LNG Project.
Banking Services in Kerema town inthe Gulf Province will return bythe end ofthe year after an absence of 4 years.
Deputy Chief Executive Officer for BeP, Johnson Kalo and Gulf Governor, Havila Kavo signed an Agreement to that effect today.
Governor Havila Kavo said progress was slow whenthe bank was closed following a robbery by convicted robber, WilliamKapris and his gang in 2008.
Mr. Kavo said it has been a desperate wait andthe people vowed to take full ownership of this initiative.
BeP has no regrets to return its services to Kerema, however, Deputy Chief Executive Officer Johnson Kalo said this istheir last chance.
Mr. Kalo today signed an Agreement withthe Gulf Provincial Government and Administration to set up a Rural Beanch in Kerema with up to eight (8) staff members providing basic banking services such as deposits, withdrawals and opening new accounts.
BeP closed its doors in 2008 after its branch in Kerema was subjected to a robbery where a substantial amount of money was stolen. Work onthe new Rural Beanch will commence later this month and expected to be completed by or beforethe end ofthe year.
Complementingthe Rural Beanch, Agents will be set up inthe surrounding Districts. Already an agreement is in place for an Agent in Ihu Districtowest of Kerema. Agents will be set up at ther areas withinthe province in coming months.
The bank will also rollout its Mobile Banking solution and have teams visit communities to sign up customers.
