Ipatas: Asylum Deal a Win-Win Deal

Enga Governor Peter Ipatas has hit back at critics ofthe Asylum Seeker agreement betweePNG and Australia, as ignorant ofthe immediate and long term benefits ofthe deal.

 

He said it was a win-win for both countries and Prime Ministershould be commended for his foresight.

The announcement ofthe asylum seeker agreement received wide spread criticism from aroundthe country.

“Whenthe people and government of Australia need genuine help and ifthey come to us as a country which is a friendand a beneficiary to Australia’s tax money, obviously we also have an obligation to consider assistingthem so long as we are not compromisingthe integrity andthe interest of this country,” said Governor Ipatas.
 

He said critics did not realizethe magnitude ofthe economic benefits, especially for Manus Province.

 

Development projects would now take place, funded by both governments.

 

Projects such asthe Angau Hospital Re-developmentoMadang Highway upgrade, and rebuilding infrastructure at universities would not have taken place withoutthe Australian Governments support.

 

&ldquoIn this new deal, we have an opportunity to maintainthe current infrastructure as well as expanding.”

Governor Ipatas added that Australia has a huge job market and as long as its economy is secure and growing,there will be a lot of opportunities for young Papua New Guineas inthe future.
