Reports of significant flooding in Papua New Guinea’s South Fly District in Western Province along the coast of Daru to the Indonesian border indicated that at least twenty-six thousand people have been affected through contaminated water and damage to food gardens and houses.
Representatives from PNG’s National Disaster Centre, the World Health Organisation, PNG Red Cross, UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Australia’s Defence Force and AusAID had arrived in Daru to assess the damage and needs of communities in South Fly District.
Australia’s emergency relief supplies are on stand-by in both Port Moresby and Lae.
