Training of Health Workers a Priority for the Catholic Church

by Merilyn Diau-Katam – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Training of health workers in handling HIV and AIDS patients will remain a priority for the Catholic Church Health Services.

The Catholic Church has been heavily involved in supporting the fight against HIV and AIDS.

Catholic Church Health Services Secretary, Justine McMahon, said “The health workers are trained to be compassionate and caring in their approach to people but there is still stigma in the community.”

While funding remains a challenge, HIV and AIDS programs are still implemented; this is because the Church hopes through awareness this helps to promote healthy living.

Meanwhile, on contraceptive like condom use, the Catholic Church stands firm with its teaching.

“We stand 100% per cent for families. The Catholic Church will always stand for families and what’s healthy for family life,” said McMahon.
