MT ULAWUN RELIEF SUPPLIES

In a demonstration of unwavering solidarity and commitment to humanitarian aid, India has dispatched a special charter flight laden with essential relief supplies to assist the people of Papua New Guinea (PNG) grappling with the aftermath of a devastating volcanic eruption.

The flight, which took off from New Delhi and arrived in Port Moresby, carried approximately 11 tonnes of disaster relief material and 6 tonnes of medical aid, marking a significant step in India’s pledge of USD 1 million in aid to support the affected population in West New Britain Province.

The relief material includes crucial items such as tents, sleeping mats, hygiene kits, meals ready to eat, and water storage tanks, aimed at addressing the immediate needs of those displaced by the volcanic eruption.

The medical aid payload includes essential medicines, surgical items, sanitary pads, rapid antigen test kits, pregnancy test kits, mosquito repellents, and baby food, emphasizing a comprehensive approach to addressing health concerns and ensuring the well-being of the affected populace.

This initiative falls under the category of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) supplies, showcasing India’s preparedness to respond swiftly and effectively to humanitarian crises in the region.

The aid delivery is a testament to the strong diplomatic ties between India and Papua New Guinea, solidified through initiatives like the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC).

In receiving the relief supplies the member for Talasea open Francis Maneke thanked the Indian government for their generosity.

This is the third lot of foreign assistance since the eruption. Australia and the United States provided aid while the Chinese government gave K300,000 monetary support. The supplies will be transported to West New Britain once arrangements are done.
