By Jack Lapauve – EM TV, Port Moresby

It was indeed history in the making as Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, cut the ribbon to officially open a significant infrastructure in the country.

Mr O’Neill said despite receiving criticism of building such a structure, Papua New Guinea must embrace this change and move into the future.

He then officially renamed the Kookaburra Flyover to the Kumul Flyover. PM O’Neill says the renaming of the Kookaburra Flyover to the Kumul Flyover reflects the country as truly Papua New Guinean.

“I think that it is important that we name this flyover with a name that is reflective our country. Today we will name this the Kumul Flyover.

Stretching 600 meters, the flyover meets International standards and is the first built by New Zealand contractor, Hawkins.

The Prime Minister said investment in infrastructure; education and Health are changing the lives of communities and people throughout the country.

“Today we are here to say we are on a new path for Papua New Guinea that will see Papua New Guinea taking its place not only in the region and in the Pacific but within the global community.

“We are very proud to be here today, joining our Governor, our Ministers, our Hawkins Group partners and all the sub-contractors and the workers who built this,” said the Prime Minister.
