Barker: Prioritise Spending on Agriculture to Support Struggling Economy

By Jack Lapauve Jr – EM TV, Port Moresby

Director for the Institute of National Affairs, Paul Barker, wants the national government to “not spend too much on current infrastructures to host the 2015 Pacific Games.”

Barker called for more prioritised spending in the agriculture sector to support the struggling economy.

Mr Barker said it was encouraging to see the development of these games facilities but it is “a one-off event” and if it is not fully utilised or looked after, millions spent by the government will be seen as a waste.

“Agriculture sector needs more attention in the next four years”, Barker said.

He added that little improvements have been done in the coffee and cocoa industry; but more effort, and assistance must be given by the government to see the economy transform.

“The aligning of the agriculture sector plays a vital role for PNG’s economic growth; and the empowering of people.”

He is also adament that better planning for projects will avoid unnecessary spending and ensure that services are delivered.

Mr Barker made these statements in a recent interview with EMTV’s PNG Resource program.

Paul Barker is currently the Executive Director of the Papua New Guinea Institute of National Affairs and has over 30 years experience in Papua New Guinea.
