Human Rights Workshop

Even though Human Rights is part of the syllabus in police training, it is not fully emphasized.

Police Commissioner Tom Kulunga has seen the need for officers to be proper equipped, with an understanding of human rights, to serve the people.

All mobile squad commanders are to participate in a workshop on International Policing Standards and the exercising of police powers.

Yesterday was the end of a 3 day workshop, facilitated by the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Sixteen members from the 5 mobile units in the Southern Region, the National Security Unit, and 2 from NCD Public Safety, were part of the workshop.

Two members from the PNG Defence Force were part of the workshop, given their role in joint law enforcement operations with the constabulary.

The aim of the workshop was for Red Cross to support the PNGRC in its efforts, to integrate human rights and humanitarian principals into its working standards.

Human rights principals are taught at Bomana College, however it needs more emphasis, and refresher courses are vital for police men and women.

Police officers are often criticized for unacceptable behavior, and so the workshop aims to address this.

The program allows participants to examine the root cause of violent behavior in situations of disorder.

Topics such as policing challenges and constrains, arrest and detention and public order management, were covered in the workshop.

Participants received a Certificate of Participation.

Similar workshop for other 15 mobile squads throughout the country will be conducted.
