Air Niugini National Regional Cricket Championship

The inaugural Air Niugini National Regional Championships is set to light up Port Moresby, NCD from Thursday 6th March through to Sunday 9th March.

The 6 team T20 tournament will include NCD, Central, Southern, Morobe, Highlands/Momase and a Cricket PNG Colts team.

The aim of the tournament is to give the best cricketers from the outer centres an opportunity to represent their respective regions/zones.

While the tournament is meant to be held every year, that the PNG Games are not being held, Cricket PNG had to postpone the tournament from late 2013 to March 2014.

Players have been selected from the various cricket associations and the Dulux Championships, over the past 12 months.

Cricket PNG is hoping to identify some new talent in this competition who can than participate in the Hebou Shield (Elite National Championships).

Cricket PNG’s Game Development Manager, Gayan Loku, was pleased to see the interest in cricket growing around the country.

“We are very excited about the Air Niugini National Regional Championships. This is a new concept, giving cricketers from around the country to represent their region and zones in a nationwide competition…players from outside NCD were not getting enough exposure so this competition will give them that exposure. Hopefully we can identify players that can play in the Hebou Shield and one day they go on to play for the Barramundis” added Loku.

Teams outside NCD are set to arrive into Port Moresby on Tuesday 4th of March and will depart on Monday 10th March.
